What is your idea of a perfectly designed space?

A perfectly designed space is one that reflects who you are. Your home should tell your story, include elements that make you happy, and also be functional.

What is your greatest extravagance when designing a project?

I love art, bespoke pieces, or vintage finds that have movement and character. I always integrate these elements to ensure the space feels truly special and personalized to each client. Varied and interesting pieces create wow moments and bring life into a room.

What do you consider the most overrated design trend or rule?

I design based on the clients' needs, and not based on trends. It is important to design the perfect space for the person who will be living in it.

The last few years have been quite interesting in how our business has changed. What do you consider your greatest achievement in managing all this?

Adapting to the challenges the pandemic brought, the most significant achievement was the ability to pivot and innovate in response to unprecedented circumstances. I was able to manage a design business by leveraging digital platforms for client communication and idea sharing, navigate supply chain disruptions to ensure project continuity, and deliver designs that met the clients rapidly evolving needs. This adaptability not only sustained the design business but also strengthened client relationships.

If you were to die and come back as an object or space, what would it be?

I would come back as the kitchen. The kitchen is the social hub where people gather, fostering a sense of connection and togetherness. It will always be the heart of the home.

What is your motto?

Trust your gut, take risks, and stay curious.

What is your current state of mind?

Grateful.

What do you value most in your clients?

Trusting the design process is essential because it forms the foundation for effective collaboration. When clients have trust in the process, coupled with open communication, it ensures that creative ideas can be explored. Trust, communication and collaboration contribute to the overall success of a project.

Who are your favorite artist, architect and designer?

Kelly Wearstler was the first Interior designer I discovered when I was younger. I loved how she played with pattern, and her designs were bold yet timeless. She has really inspired me to be more daring with my work, play with material and geometric forms. Richard Serra. I will never forget walking through a piece by Richard Serra. That was the first time I was involved in art, and I was really captivated by the height of his pieces and being immersed in something like that. Frank Lloyd Wright emphasized that architecture should have a strong connection to the outside. Thinking of a space holistically, where it is located, and embracing the spirit of the home, are essential principles in Interior Design.

Kate's design approach is for her interiors to feel effortless, liveable, and edited. Kate has been fortunate to travel the globe, and brings these experiences into her designs. Textured and layered, Kate crafts homes that are mixed with global touches or vintage finds to ensure each space is unique to the person living in it. Kate works closely with each client to create a home that is not just for now, but is forever.

Kate feels that each project should reflect the owner. Gaining a deep understanding of their overall objectives, paired with the architecture and one's surroundings, is what drives each design. Whether it be building from the ground up, or reinventing an existing space, Kate will accommodate projects of differing sizes and budgets, and see them through from concept to execution.

Kate Spiro Interiors is a full service Interior Design Studio specializing in residential design. Kate currently resides in Miami, but partners with clients in Brooklyn and beyond.
